As a known very voracious reader, at least amongst my peer group. I have a lot of people who reach out to me and ask me for book recommendations quite often. This morning I was thinking about some of the recent requests I have had along with the fact that it is a new year and many people are thinking about what they want to accomplish in 2023.
I thought I would compile a list of books that I recommend that can truly make you unstoppable in 2023.
What does unstoppable really mean?
I guess it could mean different things to different people. Here is my definition.
It really begins with what is in your mind.
Do you personally believe you can be unstoppable?
Secondly: Do you have what it takes mentally and physically to become unstoppable. The hard reality is that it is difficult to accomplish new things. That is why most people coast. Coasting is easy. You have to have both the mind right and the body right to do things that you have never done before, because it is going to be harder than coasting.
Thirdly: As James Clears book states: “You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.” Which means you have to have good habits (systems) in place to help you get to a place you have never been before.
My mentor said it like this:
“We must all suffer from one of two pains: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. The difference is discipline weighs ounces while regret weighs tons”
And lastly, sometimes you have to quit, and I personally don’t like to use the word quit, I always say pivot. Life will throw you curveballs. And you have to learn how to pivot when things don’t go as planned. You also have to learn that there are some things it is worth hanging in there and seeing it through, while there are others that you have all of the information you need. And that data is telling you what you need to do.
Willpower: Rediscovering the Greatest Human Strength:
This books does a great job at explaining truly where willpower comes from. It isn’t as cut and dry as you think it is. There is a lot to it. Things such as when should you be doing the hardest tasks of your day. When should you workout. What I learned from this book, more than anything is the fact that time management is defiantly important, but more importantly is managing my energy because it isn’t infinite.
Atomic Habits: An easy proven way to build good habits and break bad ones.
This book is the bible when it comes to habits. Just want to put that in to the record. If you want to really change who you are and you are looking for guidance this is the book. One of the aha moments for me in this book is the identity part that is described. For you to change you must change your identity. This books provides a lot of insight and ways you can start to live the identity of the person you want to become. It is more important than you know.
Relentless: From Good to Great to Unstoppable
Out of the books I am recommending here, this is the one book I recommend the audible version. Even though I read the actual book and then bought the audio version afterwards. Tim Grover is one of the best motivators on the planet. He gets you thinking bigger and better and won’t allow your excuses to prevent you from getting you where you want to go. This book is the one you need to make sure you get up when that alarm goes off. Or when that meeting you don’t have to attend, but it could change your life, it will motivate you to make sure you go. Get this book.
The Power of Regret: How looking backward moves us forward
The reality is we all have regrets in our lives. We can use them as an excuse or we can use them as learning to move us forward. Daniel Pink is one of the most prolific writers of our current times and he eloquently puts words on paper that makes it feel like he is speaking directly to you.
Quit: The power of knowing when to walk away
Our culture is obsessed with GRIT (This one didn’t make the list but was close) not quitting, and staying in to the end. This books hits on the very most important topic though. When is the end of something? And how do you know when it is the end of something and you should move on to something else. This books lays out all of the scenarios you could imagine and provides insights backed up with research that will give you a blueprint on when it is time to move on to something else.
Look it is a new year and my hopes are that you are off and running in the new year. These five books have helped me in so many areas of my life and dfifferent times when I read them. I hope you find the time to read them as well.
Be unstoppable in 2023!
To your success and your future.
